Ski Tour in Karkyra (8 Days)

An eight-day ski-touring and freeride week based at Karkyra camp at 2,200 m, on Kyrgyzstan’s eastern border. Snowmobile uplifts provide access to the slopes several times a day, with off-piste descents of 300–800 vertical metres across the Chaar-Kuduk tract and the Tyup, Tuz and Uch-Kashka gorges. Ski natural terrain on cold, dry powder, from open bowls to steep couloirs.

Ski Touring in Karkyra: Eight Days of Off-Piste Powder in the Tien Shan

An eight-day ski-touring and freeride program based at Karkyra camp at 2,200 m, in a valley on Kyrgyzstan’s eastern border. Ski on natural, ungroomed terrain, climbing for your descents and choosing your own lines across open powder bowls, steep couloirs and broad mountain ridges.

A snowmobile provides access to the slopes and Chymyn-Sai Pass, with four transfers a day. This means less time getting to the runs and more time skiing. The terrain spans the Chaar-Kuduk tract and the Tyup, Tuz and Uch-Kashka gorges, with descents of 300–800 vertical metres. The peaks of the Terskey Ala-Too range form the backdrop. Winter temperatures in the valleys typically range from −15 to −20°C, helping preserve the light, dry powder.

Stay at Karkyra camp throughout the week. Heated yurts and three buffet meals a day provide a warm base between days on the mountain. Unpack once, explore different lines each day and return to camp in the evening.

This is backcountry skiing in avalanche terrain. Valid insurance and avalanche safety equipment are mandatory. Review the requirements below before booking to make sure you have the equipment, experience and preparation this week demands.

Tour Highlights

  • Four snowmobile uplifts a day: access to the slopes and Chymyn-Sai Pass, leaving more time for skiing and freeride descents.
  • 300–800 m vertical descents: off-piste routes across the Chaar-Kuduk tract and the Tyup, Tuz and Uch-Kashka gorges, with terrain ranging from open powder bowls to steep couloirs and broad ridges.
  • Cold, dry powder: winter temperatures of around −15 to −20°C in the valleys help preserve light snow throughout the season.
  • Eight days based at Karkyra camp: stays in heated yurts at 2,200 m, with three buffet meals a day and no need to change accommodation during the week.
  • Terskey Ala-Too mountain scenery: ski beneath the peaks of the range, with mountain ridges and gorges surrounding the ski area.

Who Is This Trip For?

A good fit if you:

  • can ski or snowboard off-piste on ungroomed snow with confidence
  • are fit enough for climbs and skinning of up to about four hours
  • carry and can use avalanche kit (transceiver, shovel, probe), and will arrange the mandatory insurance
  • want backcountry snow and a quiet camp rather than a groomed resort with lifts

Probably not the right trip if you:

  • are a beginner, or ski only on-piste
  • want resort comfort, chairlifts, and groomed runs
  • are not willing to carry avalanche equipment or arrange the required insurance
  • want a warm-weather trip; this is deep winter at altitude, at minus 15 to minus 20°C
