Nestled in the northern spurs of the Trans-Alay Range, our journey takes you to the heart of Kyrgyzstan’s high-altitude wilderness. Based at the renowned Achyk-Tash Base Camp (3,600 m), directly at the foot of the Lenin Peak (7,134 m), you will find yourself in one of the world’s premier locations for astrophotography and night sky observation.

Our program seamlessly blends high-altitude adventure with scientific discovery. With zero light pollution and thin, crystal-clear mountain air, the Milky Way reveals itself in breathtaking detail. Under the guidance of a professional astrophysicist, you will engage in solar observations by day and explore deep-space constellations by night, all while enjoying the rugged beauty of glaciers and alpine lakes like Tulpar-Kul.

Program

Day 1. Arrival to Osh, Pamir Highway

Journey along the Pamir Highway with photo stops at panoramic viewpoints of the Alay Valley and Pamir peaks. Arrival at Achyk-Tash Base Camp near Lenin Peak. Accommodation, rest, and altitude acclimatization in a high-mountain environment surrounded by glaciers and landscapes.

Day 2. Sun and Earth Exploration Day

Morning: solar telescope session with direct observation of the Sun. Understanding solar activity, structure, and its impact on Earth, along with basic concepts of planetary motion.

Afternoon: introduction to astrophotography in mountain conditions – exposure, ISO, aperture, composition, and practical techniques for shooting night skies with both camera and smartphone.

Evening: guided astronomy session under a clear Pamir sky – constellation identification, orientation techniques, and understanding the night sky through ancient navigation systems.

Day 3. Solar System Day

Educational exploration of the Solar System: formation, structure, planets, moons, and long-term evolution. Day hike to glacial moraine lakes in the Achyk-Tash valley.

Evening: telescope observations of the Moon’s surface and visible planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Mars depending on conditions).

Day 4. Milky Way Photography Day

Understanding deep-sky objects: stars, nebulae, galaxies, and their differences. Sunset hike to Lukovaya Polyana for panoramic views of Lenin Peak (7,134 m). Night photography session of the Milky Way above the Pamir mountains.

Day 5. Universe and Cosmology Day

Discussion on modern cosmology: origin of the Universe, Big Bang theory, structure of galaxies, and the scale of cosmic evolution.

Hike to Tulpar-Kul Lake, a high-altitude alpine lake with reflections of surrounding peaks.

Day 6. Reserve / Exploration Day

Backup weather day with optional hikes to Ryzhaya Katya Peak or Traveler’s Pass. Panoramic viewpoints over Lenin Peak, glacier systems, and the Alay Range.

Day 7. Departure

Return along the Pamir Highway with scenic stops for photography and final views of the Pamir mountains.

What to Know Before the Tour

Altitude: Base camps are located above 3600 m above sea level. Mild acclimatization is possible – being in good physical condition is recommended.

Weather: Mountain weather changes quickly. Days can be warm, but nights are cool.

Accommodation: Overnight stays are in tents.

Meals: Full board is included (breakfast, lunch, dinner).

Communication: Mobile coverage and internet are limited in the mountains.

Physical activity: Daily walks along the route take up to 4 hours. No special mountaineering skills are required.

Waterproof trekking boots with ankle support

Basic first aid kit including: antiseptic and antihistamine cream, throat lozenges, anti-diarrheal medicine (Imodium), painkillers, plasters and blister treatment, insect repellent, and rehydration salts

Tipping in Kyrgyzstan: rules and recommendations

In Kyrgyzstan, tips are not mandatory, but are always appreciated by service staff. Tips are not usually included in the price of services.

In cafes and restaurants, you may see an additional charge of 10-15% on your bill, but this is not a tip – it is part of the staff’s salary.

It would also be nice to tip the guide, driver, and porters. This is a great way to express your gratitude for their work and attention.

As a guideline, the average tip is approximately USD 7-10 per person per day, which is distributed among all staff members – drivers, guides, porters.

However, the amount of the tip is always at your discretion and depends on the quality of service and your means.
