Climb a Technical 7010 m Peak in the Tien-Shan

Khan Tengri (7010 m) is one of the highest and most recognizable peaks of the Central Tien Shan, located on the border of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

Khan Tengri requires strong high-altitude endurance and advanced technical climbing skills. Steep ridges, exposed sections, glacier terrain, and fixed-rope climbing make it a demanding alpine ascent.

The expedition starts in Bishkek, continues by road to Karkyra, and reaches South / North Engilchek Base Camp (4000 m) by helicopter.

The Route

Khan Tengri is climbed via the classic Western Ridge route, progressing through a series of high-altitude camps that support acclimatization, rotations, and the final summit push.

The expedition begins at South Engilchek Base Camp (4000 m). From here, climbers move through:

  • Base Camp — 4000 m
  • Camp 1 — 4200 m
  • Camp 2 — 5300 m
  • Camp 3 — 5800 m
  • Summit — 7010 m

Each stage introduces new challenges, from glacier travel and crevassed terrain to steep snow, ice, and exposed ridge sections equipped with fixed ropes. Proper acclimatization, efficient movement between camps, and careful summit timing are essential.

Why Khan Tengri Is Different

Khan Tengri is not just about altitude — it is about precision, movement, and decision-making in technical terrain.

Climbers must be comfortable with:

  • fixed-rope ascents and descents
  • exposed ridge climbing
  • glacier navigation and objective hazards
  • sustained effort at high altitude

Who This Expedition Is For

Khan Tengri is a serious 7000 m expedition best suited for climbers who:

  • have previous climbs above 6000 m
  • are confident using fixed ropes and technical equipment
  • have experience on mixed snow, ice, and rock terrain
  • are physically prepared for sustained high-altitude effort

Why Climb with Ak-Sai Travel

Ak-Sai Travel has operated expeditions in the Pamir and the Tien-Shan since 1998, supporting climbers from dozens of countries. We run the base camps, hold the permits, handle the transport, and coordinate the mountain logistics, so the system behind your climb is managed by one experienced local team.

We Operate the Base and High-Altitude Camps

We run the base and high-altitude camps on the mountain, staffed every season, so you arrive to a camp that is already set up and can put your energy into acclimatization, recovery, and the summit push.

Our Own Mountain Rescue Team

We operate our own mountain rescue team and carry out rescue operations in the mountains, working alongside the Ministry of Emergency Situations (except Pobeda Peak).

One Local Team, in Bishkek and on the Mountain

Permits, transport, and camp operations are handled by one local team, with people at our Bishkek office and on location at the camps, so support is close by through the expedition.

Guides Trained to Recognised Mountaineering Standards

Our mountain guides are trained toward established mountaineering standards, including national and Soviet-era classifications, and hold professional mountaineering categories. They work these peaks season after season.

Expedition Leaders

Ak-Sai Travel expeditions on Lenin Peak are led by experienced high-altitude guides who have climbed and guided extensively across the Pamirs and Tien Shan. All members of the team hold the Snow Leopard award, earned by climbers who have summited all five 7000-meter peaks of the former USSR. These guides lead acclimatization rotations, manage summit strategy, and make critical safety decisions throughout the expedition.
